Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Supports
Culturally safe, community-minded support that honours family, kinship and connection to Country.
Acknowledgement of Country
We walk and work on Aboriginal land
Haven Community Care acknowledges the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the lands, waters and skies across Victoria and New South Wales where we live and work. We pay our respects to Elders past and present, and recognise the continuing connection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to Country, culture and community.
We recognise that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people experience disability at higher rates, and often face barriers to getting the right support. We are committed to doing our part to change that.

Our approach
How we support First Nations participants
Culturally safe support is defined by the people we support. These are the commitments we make.
We listen first
Planning starts with a yarn – on your terms, at your pace, with the people you choose.
Family & kinship
We respect family structures and kinship roles, and welcome family and community into decisions.
Language & interpreters
We arrange accredited Aboriginal language interpreters where needed, and use plain, clear language.
Connection to Country
We support time on Country, cultural activities and Return to Country journeys.
Sorry business
We are flexible around Sorry business, ceremony and cultural obligations.
Respect for Elders
We work respectfully with Elders and community leaders, and follow local protocols.
Community partnerships
We work alongside Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations and local services.
Ongoing learning
Our workers complete cultural awareness training and keep learning from community.

Return to Country
Helping participants reconnect with Country, family and culture
For many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with disability, being away from Country means being away from what matters most. Our Return to Country supports help participants plan safe, supported visits home – travel, accommodation, personal care and support on Country – led by the participant, their family and community.
Our workforce
Growing a culturally strong team
We are committed to employing and supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people at every level of our organisation, and to matching participants with workers they feel comfortable with.
If you are an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person interested in disability support work, we would love to hear from you.
